Heavy, dense materials are what most often push a load over its limit: concrete, dirt, and brick, along with roofing debris and wet materials, weigh far more per cubic yard than household junk. A dumpster that looks half-full can still be over its weight allowance if it’s loaded with these materials.

Standard roll-off dumpsters cannot accept certain materials, and tossing them in can lead to a rejected pickup or a contamination fee. Commonly banned items include:

• Hazardous materials and chemicals (paints, solvents, pesticides)
• Tires and vehicle batteries
• Appliances containing freon (refrigerators, air conditioners) unless freon is certified removed
• Most electronics (TVs, monitors, computers)

Debris needs to sit level with or below the top edge of the container. An overflowing load isn’t just a safety issue for transport — it’s grounds for a rejected pickup or an extra trip charge. If you’re not sure your project will fit, it’s worth confirming sizing before delivery rather than guessing.

A loaded roll-off dumpster is extremely heavy, and dropping one directly onto asphalt or concrete — especially during summer heat or a freeze-thaw cycle — can crack the surface. Laying down wooden planks or plywood under the delivery point before drop-off is the simplest way to prevent this. If your driveway can’t handle the weight, ask about lawn placement instead.

Most flat-rate quotes lock in a standard rental window (commonly 7 days). Keeping the container past that window adds a daily extension fee, typically $10 to $21 per day depending on the provider. If your project might run long, ask about extension pricing when you book so it’s not a surprise later.

Placing a dumpster entirely on private property — your driveway or yard — does not require a permit from the City of Green Bay. Placing a container on a public street, sidewalk, or other right-of-way is different: the City requires a Right-of-Way Obstruction Permit from the Department of Public Works before the container is delivered.

“Dumpster storage” is listed as a specific obstruction purpose on the City’s permit application, which also requires the work site address, cross-street boundaries, planned start/end dates, and a traffic control plan if the container will sit on an arterial or collector street.
